What are LTI Tools?
LTI stands for Learning Tools Interoperability, and is an integration standard for third party tools for learning management systems (LMS) like Canvas.
What concerns are there for LTI tools?
- FERPA/Privacy
- Accessibility
- Security
- Cost
- Level of installation (some tools can only be installed system wide while others can be installed at the school or course level)
- Copyright/ownership of content and how content may be used by the vendor
- Terms of Service/License Agreements
What is the LTI review process?
- Once a request is submitted, it is reviewed by the TCNJ Canvas Administrators. The review process includes, but is not limited to:
- Discussing expectations with faculty to determine if the product requires Canvas authentication and course enrollment feeds. Due to the use of student data (subject to FERPA regulations) in some LTIs, the review process may take considerably longer than estimated.
- Considering any products or features that already exist within TCNJ’s instructional systems.
- Verifying the LTI technical viability within Canvas and/or vendor integration specialists.
- Quality assurance testing (with requesters) to check for accessibility, compatibility and reliability.
- Determining what the support structure is for the LTI after it is installed.
Keys to the review process:
- For consideration a request must be submitted at least eight weeks prior to start of semester to allow time for review of the LTI
- A request for an LTI does not guarantee approval, see below on what is included in the LTI review process
- If the LTI is approved for use:
- The LTI will be installed in a Canvas Development site for you to test the setup and functionality
- The LTI will be installed into your Canvas course one week prior to start of semester (Fall, Spring, Summer)
How may TCNJ faculty request approval of an LTI?
Because student data like assignment grades may be passed back and forth through the LTI, there is an approval process for each LTI. The approval process will include a review of functionality, accessibility, security, compliance with College policies, cost and other factors. Be advised the review process could take several weeks. The process to submit a request for a Canvas LTI begins by completing the Canvas LTI Request form.
