Universal Design
Universal design refers to the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design. Universal design in higher education involves creating environments and using instructional strategies that meet the needs of students with a wide variety of characteristics.
Sheryl Burgstahler, Director of the DO-IT Center of the University of Washington, is one of the nation’s leading authorities on universal design in postsecondary education. Here is information on two of her publications on the subject:
1) “Universal Design in Postsecondary Education: Process, Principles, & Applications.” This article provides an overview of the meaning of universal design, its principles, the process of universal design, and examples of applications. Available at:
